For frequent business travelers, and families or groups of friends traveling for leisure for weeks, hotels can be an expensive option and are impractical for long-term stays. Instead, they can always opt for serviced apartments which offer the convenience of a hotel at a lower cost plus a bevy of other benefits.

Serviced residences are often spacious than hotels and more similar in look and feel to apartments. Imbuing a homier touch, they provide occupants with the comfort and convenience of home when out of town.

Suitable for long and short-term stays, serviced apartments are generally fully furnished. They come with a living room, a dining area and a fully functioning kitchen, which enables occupants to store perishables and other food items and cook meals, saving tons of money in the process.

Like hotels, serviced apartments offer Wi-Fi, television and telephone, and other facilities and services that include laundry, housekeeping, 24-hour front desk, gym, swimming pool and parking area. Some serviced residences even offer room service. Serviced residences are very conveniently located throughout different parts of the UAE.

In Sharjah, there is a variety of serviced apartments in the Al Khan, Rolla and Al Qassimiya areas. Some offer luxurious amenities and facilities while others provide guests with only the basic necessities. Rates vary, and the average price per night is around Dh250 for a studio unit.

In Dubai, areas such as Deira, Bur Dubai, Dubai Marina, Tecom and Al Barsha have a wide variety of serviced apartments to suit different tastes and budgets. The average price per day for a studio unit is less than Dh300 depending on the location and amenities available.

In Abu Dhabi, there are serviced apartment buildings on Electra Street, Hamdan Street and Al Zahiyah (formerly called Tourist Club Area), with average prices for a one-bedroom starting at more or less Dh300 per day depending on the location and facilities offered.

Handy Hints:

* Serviced residences appeal well to frequent travelers who find hotels costly

* They come with a fully functioning kitchen, a dining area and a living room

* Rates start at around Dh250 depending on location and amenities available
