Abu Dhabi, like the other emirates, has a wide variety of housing options for families and singles alike. For the latter, the challenge is to look for a suitable place that does not take a bite out of the budget as the emirate has witnessed high rents since the rent cap was removed.
One of the best places in the capital for single people is Al Markaziyah. It is amongst Abu Dhabi’s busiest and oldest localities. As it was once considered the capital’s central business district (Al Maryah Island is currently the new CBD), the whole area is filled with residential and commercial buildings, dining establishments and small shops spread on Hamdan, Electra and Khalifa Streets. Corniche, which is perfect for picnics, and beach and other outdoor activities, is just a few minutes’ walk away. A new landmark in the locality that aims to claim back its old glory days is the Burj Mohammad bin Rashid, formerly called World Trade Center, currently the emirate’s tallest building. Rents in Al Markaziyah vary, depending on the age of the building. Centrally located, public transportation is never a problem here.
Al Zahiyah, previously known as the Tourist Club Area, is perfect for singles as it is dotted with low-rise apartment blocks offering affordable rents. Boasting one of the capital’s oldest malls, several shops, restaurants and cafes, and excellent transport links, living here is easy and convenient. It is also near the Corniche.
Another area that shares the Corniche is Khalidiya. It has plenty of villas and apartment blocks which offer residents, both singles and families alike, splendid views of the city. A well-known quiet expatriate neighbourhood, it exudes a relaxed community feel. The area contains popular supermarkets, a mall and dozens of small groceries.
Off-island, one affordable residential destination for families and single people is Khalifa City. Divided into three areas, the suburb has various mixed-use developments that cater to those who savour a convenient lifestyle that is not only far from the hustle and bustle of the city, but is also easy on the wallet. Public transport links to the city centre are plentiful in this area.
• Al Markaziyah, Al Zahiyah and Khalidiya are where most singles are residing
• The three offer affordable housing options plus proximity to Corniche area
• In the mainland, single expats may consider looking at the Khalifa City area
