Dubai has come up with a unique eco-living concept that is aimed at considerably reducing the city’s carbon footprint. Its ambitious sustainable city project, which will be developed in keeping with the desert environment, will start construction next year.
Referred to as the Desert Rose, the mixed-use project will be shaped like a flower and spread over 14,000 hectares of land near the Shaikh Mohammad bin Zayed Road towards the Al Lusail desert. The residential area will serve as a self-sustaining city with its own network of roads, public transportation, schools and medical facilities. It will reserve a fair share of plots for UAE nationals and allow expatriates to invest in the remaining plots.
The massive Dh30 billion project has stressed on eco-friendly measures for its residents. The roofs of buildings and homes will be fitted with solar panels that are capable of generating 200 megawatts of electricity. There will also be a sewage recycling plant that can recycle more than 40,000 cubic metres of waste water.
In keeping with its theme, the pedestrian path will have green features to consume less energy. It will be air-conditioned only during the summer months. Besides, a green belt has also been planned to act as an environmental buffer zone, which will be utilised for agricultural production facilities.
Moreover, an electronic light rail system will be connected to the Dubai Metro, allowing residents to reduce dependence on private transportation. This will greatly contribute to the larger issue of ecological and sustainable living.
Since the project is going to be developed on a huge scale, it will be phased and completed over the next few years. However, officials are optimistic about finishing a part of it by the start of Expo 2020. Once completed, it aims to compete with the best sustainable cities in the world.
As a whole, Desert Rose will convert a dry stretch of desert land into a green zone, allowing Dubai residents to find an abode flanked by all the goodness of a sustainable living environment.
