With Qatar Airways offering daily direct flights to Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) starting October 2015, expect more businesses to set up shop and tourists to visit the rustic emirate in the years to come.

Amidst an endless expanse of shimmering blue sea and mountains stretched towards distant Oman, RAK is full of history and recreation. The National Museum at Al Hisn Fort is a reserve of cultural and archeological interests. Other historical sites bear antiquities and relics of the 1800s.

One place never to be missed for sightseeing is the rocky mountain of Jebel Jais. With a 1,934-metre summit, its serpentine road accords visitors breathtaking views. Receiving snow during winter, there are plans to transform it into a paradise for skiing and paragliding.

For some daring adventures, the Ice Land Water Park has lots of attractions and thrilling rides. The Tower Links and Al Hamra Golf Clubs, set by the lagoons and the Arabian Gulf waters, offer some breathing space for sports enthusiasts.

Camping along the coastline, and exploring the Khatt Springs and RAK Zoo have become popular weekend activities. There is also camel racing in Al Sawan.

The emirate's real estate industry is currently witnessing many developments, with luxury hotels such as Rixos Bab Al Bahr, Waldorf Astoria, The Cove Rotana, Banyan Tree Al Wadi and Hilton making it their home. About 30 more new hotels are expected to be built by 2022.

There are also mixed-use developments (some are waterfront projects) that are either finished or currently undergoing construction in different parts of the emirate, giving both end-users and investors a wide range of choices when it comes to picking a holiday home.

One need not go too far for a weekend getaway. All that one dreams of when thinking of a decadent day in Nassau or a beach party scene in Ibiza is found right in Ras Al Khaimah.

Handy Hints:

• About 30 hotels will be constructed in Ras Al Khaimah by 2022

• RAK is famous for beachside camping and mountain trekking

• Jebel Jais and Khatt Springs are some of its tourist attractions
