A couple of new initiatives will gradually transform the Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), a medical and wellness hub, into a nerve center of medical education in the region. Currently, around 4,000 licensed health professionals operate from this free zone which has two hospitals and more than 120 outpatient medical centers.
One of the eagerly awaited projects at DHCC is the 400-bed teaching hospital slated to start in the next two years. Aside from training physicians, it is also expected to produce other health professionals like nurses.
An innovative pre-medical educational course is also likely to be offered to students at DHCC which will train them to opt for full-fledged medical courses in the future. A Swiss educational institute will join hands with Al Jalila Foundation to conduct it.
The existing medical educational facilities at DHCC include the Dubai School of Dental Medicine (DSDM), a specialized postgraduate dental school. The school offers accredited programs in dental specialties such as endodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics and pediatric dentistry.
Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Medical Simulation Center occupies the pride of place at DHCC. It is the region’s only state-of-the-art facility that provides medical training in a simulated environment with life-size mannequins serving as dummy patients.
The Al Maktoum Medical Library, also located within DHCC, houses the most advanced collection of medical education resources in print and digital format.
As per the planned expansion of DHCC, an area of 19 million square feet has been earmarked for spa resorts, sports medicine facilities, waterfront residences and nutrition centers. This is expected to bolster the reputation of Dubai as an attractive medical tourism destination. There are also plans to launch retirement homes where residents can avail of a 24-hour medical facility.
• A 400-bed medical college will be launched at DHCC in 2016
• Medical training in a simulated environment available at DHCC
• DHCC has a medical library with extensive collection of resources
