Nakheel has awarded a contract to Overseas AST Company for the construction of the Dh150-million Boardwalk on the Palm Jumeirah. The Boardwalk will transform an 11km protective crescent into a destination for walking, shopping and dining, according to the developer.
The project will include an East and West Pier, each stretching 100m out to sea and featuring glass-encased cafés and restaurants with extensive views. Accessible from 14 points along the existing sidewalk, the Boardwalk will be created by building over the rocks of the Palm's breakwater. It will be 6m wide - more than double the width of the existing crescent path - with 30 kiosks offering refreshments and souvenirs throughout its length.
Construction will start before the end of the year and is expected to be completed by mid-2016.
"The Boardwalk, one of several new projects under way on the island, will be a big draw for Palm residents, the wider community of Dubai and the millions of tourists who visit Dubai each year," said a Nakheel spokesman.
