Thinking about driverless cars in a city run by solar and other renewable energy sources? This utopia is slowly coming to life in Abu Dhabi. Masdar was created to help diversify Abu Dhabi’s economy in line with the points laid out in the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030.

The development is designed to utilise solar and other renewable energy sources, promoting sustainability at the forefront. It consists of five areas: Masdar City, Free Zone, Masdar Special Projects, Masdar Clean Energy and Masdar Capital.

Masdar City is a mixed-use development. When fully completed, it will have offices, commercial centres, industrial facilities and residences. Its remarkable features include wind towers that generate ventilation without extra costs, movement sensors for water and electrical flows, wastewater recycling facilities, solar panels on the ground and rooftops, and zero-carbon technology. It also has solar-powered driverless cars.

Masdar City hosts companies in the fields of green building; energy generation, storage, transmission and distribution; water and wastewater; transportation; solid waste and recycling, among others. It offers businesses build-to-suit projects, office and retail space, and plots of land. For instance, the Incubator Building provides companies with office space in different sizes.

The sustainable development is also home to the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology which focuses on seeking solutions for issues such as climate change and clean energy. It encourages research and development in the fields of electronics, energy and smart building.

One of Masdar City’s tenants is the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), which built its permanent headquarters in the smart city. IRENA promotes the use of renewable energy.

Investors interested in setting up in a location that takes sustainability to the highest level may consider Masdar City as their next business destination.

Handy Hints:

* Masdar City is fast becoming the world’s most sustainable city

* One of its tenants is IRENA, which is into renewable energy use

* Masdar Institute focuses on seeking new solutions to usual issues
