When Dubai won the bid to host the six-month long World Exposition 2020, beating other countries like Turkey and Russia, and becoming the first Middle Eastern host to the event held once every five years, the joy of residents of the UAE was palpable. And the celebrations included fireworks in true Dubai style, and a one-day holiday for all educational institutions.
The site for the trade exhibition, expected to bring in millions of new visitors and set new benchmarks for tourism in the country, is in Dubai Trade Centre-Jebel Ali,. After obtaining approval of the master plan and theme contained in the Registration Dossier by the governing body of the World Expos, the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE), construction is expected to start early 2015. A deadline for the completion of all construction is set for October 2019, a full year before the event is expected to start in October 2020.
The theme chosen for the Expo is ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’. The site area, covering over 400 hectares will be subdivided into multiple themed sections, each of which will contain both an entertainment zone and a pavilion showcasing the theme. Additionally, an Expo Village is expected to be ready by 2018. It will house staff from around the world working at the Expo for their respective countries, which is expected to have nearly 250 participants.
Road and transport needs have also been paid close attention to, to ensure the visitor traffic is transported to and from the venue with convenience and ease. The red line of the Dubai Metro will be extended to the site and a station will be constructed at the venue itself.
It is worth mentioning that, keeping in line with green initiatives across the country, the Expo will be generating half its energy needs through renewable sources.
