With nuclear families being the norm, adults along with children are increasingly leading isolated lives. The joint-family system is almost non-existent and people are constantly falling back on communities for support. A self-contained or integrated community often has solutions to everyday problems and provides the perfect environment for a healthy social life.
The UAE has various developments that emulate the integrated community model. Aside from residences, these developments offer other elements that make the residents’ life more comfortable and convenient. They are described as vibrant, trendy and safe.
As financial burdens increase, parents often have to spend long hours outside homes and children in nuclear families may feel neglected. But, an integrated community can be the perfect place for growing up with children of similar ages and surrounded by loving elders. It helps that this type of community has ease of access to parks, recreational areas and community centres where children and parents can bond on weekends. Schools, nurseries and training institutes are also within reach.
Furthermore, self-contained communities have retail shops, dining outlets, beauty salons, offices and medical facilities, creating no further need to drive long distances.
Aside from these, the residents’ lifestyle are also improved with the availability of sports and fitness facilities such as gyms, swimming pools, sports courts, jogging/walking tracks and bicycle trails.
Another advantage of choosing to live in an integrated community is that most have a comprehensive transportation network, making commuting to other areas quicker.
Some communities in the UAE boast extensive sustainability features. This not only makes them self-sustaining in terms of generating power or recycling water, this also helps members imbibe and practice eco living. Examples of integrated communities in the UAE are Al Reef Villas and Al Bandar in Abu Dhabi, Dubai Marina, Dubai Silicon Oasis and Jumeirah Lakes Towers in Dubai and Al Zahia in Sharjah.
As a whole, an integrated community creates a one-stop shop for everything and helps residents lead a more relaxed and convenient lifestyle.
