With the majority of homeowners preferring to park their vehicles in the driveway, a garage is probably the most neglected and underutilised pocket of space in a big house. In modern houses, this space can range from 150 to 500 square feet or more. With a little thought and careful planning, a garage can be cleverly remodeled into functional setups for various members of the family.

Home office – Working from home is easier said than done. Thanks to the television, and kitchen and laundry appliances, the level of noise in a normal household can be very disturbing, to say the least. A garage that is converted into an office can be a perfect solution in this scenario. Not only does this provide you with a dedicated working space, it also separates work and home life effectively.

Study – If you have an older teen or young adult in the house, you can consider converting the garage into an exclusive study for them. Add a chair and desk, some shelves for books, Internet and printer connections and a sofa for lounging, if the space permits.

Playroom – If you wish to keep your toddler’s bedroom clutter-free at all times, shift your focus to the garage. Attached garages make for great playrooms. However, keep in mind that safety should be a priority as far as kids are concerned. Suggestions include rubber flooring, bright paint and lawn furniture to make it suitable and comfortable for the young ones.

Laundry and storage – Converting a certain section of the garage into a laundry room is not only easy but also rather convenient. Washing machines and tumble dryers are big appliances and removing them from the kitchen frees up a lot of space. The leftover area of the garage can then be used to store miscellaneous items such as luggage, clothes, unwanted furniture, bikes, boats and others.

Before you undertake to convert your garage into a living space, there are aspects such as building permits, ventilation, insulation, wiring, cabling and plumbing that require serious considerations. Hence, it is always recommended to hire an experienced contractor who is capable of such overhaul.

Handy Hints:

* Modern-day garages are much more than places to park your vehicle

* Remodeling is a cost-effective way to expand your home living space

* Check ventilation, flooring, cabling and plumbing when remodeling a garage
