Around the world, do it yourself (DIY) home improvement enthusiasts tear down old furniture and make new ones, and spray paint their homes and yards or put up partition walls. Not only can the approach save on labor costs, it also allows one to unleash his creativity.
But in the UAE, barring a few die-hard DIY fans, most of us prefer to leave these jobs to contractors. However, here are a few considerations if you want to contribute to your home décor with your own hands, but before you get your hands dirty, here a few DIY tools you must have: claw hammer for driving nails, adjustable wrench which is suited for many tasks with jaws which can be adjusted to fit nuts and bolts of different sizes, pliers which are used to turn or pull out nails and measuring tape.
If you want to take on the role of a painter, it is essential to get your hands on a good brush with long bristles of equal length. Since you are not an expert, there are chances of paint spilling on to your furniture and floors, so it is essential to cover these with drop cloth which can be washed and reused.
Give your front door a new lease on life with a fresh coat of paint. You can paint the borders in different colors to customize your look, and add accents.
You can also add interesting tiles to jazz up your entryway. Half-paint your walls to create an illusion of higher ceilings or stick self-adhesive wallpaper in one wall to highlight it. Wallpapers are easy to apply, remove and reuse.
To give your cabinets a quirky look, find interesting knobs and pulls, and replace the old ones. This is an easy way to make your kitchen, bedrooms or bathroom look different. You can also paint the insides of your cabinets.
Make your own photo frames by pasting pictures in the center of old vinyl records or round placemats, and use removable adhesive squares to hang them. One good idea is to mount interesting plates on your wall or frame fabrics.
