A lot of people, even those who find themselves not quite able to swim, like living by the sea because of the fresh warmth of the sea air during summer, the cool soothing sea breeze during winter and the spectacular views beachfront living offers even from varying angles.
The UAE, being a country substantially surrounded by water, has capitalised on its seaside areas with developers initiating massive residential and mixed-use projects located by or near the sea and other bodies of water.
Take for example the perennial expat favourite Dubai Marina which also features the popular Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) that occupies two square kilometres of premium waterfront area. The district is well-known for the Marina Walk, The Walk at JBR, a sizeable mooring station, various hotels and the Dubai Marina Mall.
Palm Jumeirah is another popular beachfront development that has always been on top of the premium property market, while old Jumeirah, which is located by the sea, remains the residence of choice for members of the Emirati gentry and even expatriate residents who like the generally pleasant ambience of the area.
The Abu Dhabi corniche area has been one of the earlier centres of development in the capital, with landmarks like the Marina Mall, Emirates Palace and the Corniche Beach, and iconic buildings like Landmark Tower and Jumeirah at Etihad Towers lining the famous seafront. Other notable beachfront developments in the capital include Saadiyat Island, Al Raha Beach and Reem Island.
In other places, Al Hamra Village in Ras Al Khaimah is one of the emirate’s well-known residential addresses, while Mina Al Arab is famous among tourists and short-term residents. Sharjah and Ajman have their popular corniche areas, while Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have both capitalised on their beach areas for tourism and commercial activities.
