One of the oldest and most vibrant commercial hubs in Dubai is Deira. Located on the other side of the Dubai Creek, it is considered part of old Dubai since the development of Shaikh Zayed Road and newer areas going towards Abu Dhabi.
Commercially, Deira has an interesting mix of the old and new all in one hub. It has modern shopping malls such as Deira City Centre, Al Ghurair City and Reef Mall. Side by side these malls are a number of small shopping centers, retail shops, groceries and supermarkets.
There are many banks in the area including the Mashreqbank head office and the Emirates NBD Group headquarters as well as a plethora of modern buildings dotting the locality. Hotels also abound in the area, from three-star hotels to the big five-star properties.
On the shore of the Dubai Creek is a small port known as Port Saeed which hosts small shipping boats and dhow cruises.
Some of Deira’s oldest businesses are souks which are located near the creek. The Gold Souk carries various gold jewelry and gems for men, women and children. The Spice Souk is a food aficionado’s haven selling a wide variety of spices that includes cinnamon, aniseed and saffron, and herbs and fragrances. The Naif souk sells a wide range of household goods, clothes, accessories, perfumes and other popular items.
If you are in need of fresh seafood, Deira is popular among Dubai residents for its fish market. Not only does it sell daily catch from the sea, it also has several stalls dedicated to fresh vegetables and fruits, and meat.
Doing business in Deira is easy as it has quick access to the Dubai Metro, hosting both underground and overhead metro tracks. It also has a bus station with buses ferrying passengers to Sharjah and other northern emirates. Taxis are plentiful in the area. Abras also remain a popular mode of transport.
