What do Waldorf Astoria hotels around the world have in common, apart from name and fame? It is a tradition called Peacock Alley. A signature lounge found in every Waldorf Astoria, Peacock Alley is a personification of impeccable style. Each Peacock Alley flaunts a style unique to itself, and the one in Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah is among the more enchanting versions. Upon entering the lounge, visitors are greeted by an illuminated statue of a peacock, encrusted with authentic gems and valued at around Dh1.5 million.
Inside an array of elegant armchairs accented with bold cushions are arranged around a towering marble fountain, which produces a serene and soothing sound to help guests unwind. It also helps keep conversations between tables private.
Guests are seated beneath a dramatic chandelier made of handcrafted glass and featuring delicate ornaments resembling the feathers of a peacock. Intricate geometric paper sculptures made from barley straw, flax fibres and gold leaves by artist Gill Wilson have been specifically commissioned. The artistic credit behind Peacock Alley can be attributed to artists at The Gallery HBA London.
Further inside, a flamboyant flight of stairs catches attention, resembling a feather boa as it drapes around the shoulders of the room. In the middle is a grand piano to serenade guests with live performances.
Peacock Alley has also been transformed to serve as a venue for events.
''Hilton Worldwide International had a large sales conference at the hotel and the Alley was converted into a lavish dining room,'' says Katie Hollamby, the hotel's Public Relations Manager.
Guests will not miss the grandiose clock with a pearlised glass dome at the entrance of Peacock Alley. Considered the ''pearl'' of the hotel, the champagne gold clock is inspired by the emirate's pearl diving tradition.
The first thing that welcomes guests is a cherished phrase derived from a Bedouin poem, ''From your homeland travel abroad to find glory.'' This holds true for the Waldorf Astoria, which turns every visit into a glorious experience.
