The Lakes - Little pocket of calm in the bustle of the city

The Lakes - Little pocket of calm in the bustle of the cityManuela Chaaya (inset) and her family are happy to live in The Lakes

The Lakes is an exclusive community of spacious and well-laid out villas and townhouses. As the name indicates, some properties are surrounded by large man-made lakes offering uninterrupted views, while others face the lush green expanse of the Emirates Golf Club.

A calm and peaceful pocket within the prestigious Emirates Living development, The Lakes is conveniently linked to other communities like The Springs and The Meadows. It also lies in the vicinity of several established neighbourhoods like Dubai Marina, Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and Dubai Knowledge Village. The area is so peaceful and green that it is hard to believe that it is in such close proximity to two major highways – Shaikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road.

Tranquil and scenic waterways, parks, landscaped greenery and pools; treelined roads and cycling pavements – the locality surely sounds like a dream world but is definitely a reality and, generally speaking, more upmarket than its immediate neighbouring community The Springs.

The Lakes offers residents 24-hour security, tennis and squash courts, gyms, children's play areas and swimming pools. Apart from the popular community centre, which features a restaurant, there is also a health club and a supermarket. Other amenities include grocery shops, restaurants, cafes and a nursery.

Ramzi Watfa, a financial consultant, and Manuela Chaaya, a teacher, have lived in the upscale Hattan for almost a decade now. Their elder children Ghazal and Suraya study abroad while the younger ones, Azalea and Wadi, are students of Dubai International Academy. Theirs is a three-level villa comprising five bedrooms with a private garden and a swimming pool.

The Lakes holds a special appeal for families and professionals as it provides a well-serviced suburban community living. ''Staying in The Lakes comes with a big share of advantages,'' says Manuela. ''It has a distinct community feeling that can easily rival other localities. The safety aspect is a big advantage and so is the convenience factor as it comes with all facilities and comforts. Perhaps the biggest advantage is that it is a bike-friendly area; hence, dependence on cars is reduced to a bare minimum,'' she adds.

Manuela is also happy that her children's school is located in the neighbouring Emirates Hills which saves on precious commute time.

What did they consider while house hunting? ''With four children, the size of the house was of prime importance. The houses in Hattan suited our requirements well. Also, our focus was on a community that was close enough to facilities like schools, hospitals and grocery stores and to my parents who live in Umm Suqueim,'' Manuela says.

She adds that The Lakes Club provides residents with a gym, squash and tennis courts, swimming pools, a restaurant and a small supermarket. A call centre is available round the clock to deal with the residents' grievances.

The Watfa family is a regular visitor to the club as Manuela uses the gym while her kids enjoy swimming.

However, Manuela feels that the security factor, particularly in Hattan, needs to be upgraded to give residents more privacy. She would also be happy if there were more community events, markets and fairs.

Overall though, the Watfa family loves living in The Lakes and has no plans of moving, a testimony to the healthy and happy environment the community offers.

• Calm and peaceful surroundings

• Impeccable views

• A self-contained community with fitness facilities and other modern conveniences

• Good landscaping and maintenance

• Less community events and fairs

• Lax security particularly in Hattan
