Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC) has received a shot in the arm with the addition of nine new health care centers, the registration of more than 300 new healthcare professionals and the increase in the number of patients in the first half of 2014.
These positive trends have injected a new life to its expansion plans. As part of its Phase 2 program, a separate cluster consisting of spa resorts, sports medicine facilities, waterfront residences and nutrition centers will come up. Spread over 19 million square feet, this will also house retirement homes that will provide round-the-clock medical services to its residents.
As per figures released by the DHCC authorities, visits by patients to this free zone have crossed 600,000 in the first six months of the year. Around 1.2 million patients are expected to visit DHCC in 2014, significantly more than 1 million patients who had come for treatment in 2013.
Set up in 2002, DHCC has 124 clinical and around 180 non-clinical facilities which include healthcare consultancy, clinical research organizations and patient education services. About 96 per cent of the buildings in DHCC Phase 1 are occupied.
DHCC aims to drive Dubai’s reputation as one of the most popular medical tourism destinations globally. Currently, around 15 per cent of DHCC’s patients are medical tourists. Treatments related to infertility, dental, cardiac, orthopedic problems and cosmetic procedures are most sought after by patients visiting DHCC.
It is also in the forefront of medical education and research in the UAE, housing the Mohammed bin Rashid Academic Medical Center. It also runs the Dubai College of Dental Medicine which conducts postgraduate courses in six specialized dental streams. The Al Maktoum Medical Library and the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Medical Simulation Center are also located in DHCC.
