Fann-A-Porter - Art to go

Fann-A-PorterThe gallery features an eclectic collection of various works, with everything from abstract portraits to contemporary sculptures and stationery on display

The Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates has a host of opulent features. From the exclusive coffee that’s brewed here to the sparkling wall in the Aspen lounge studded with Swarovski crystals, there is a lot to rave about. But if you’re not one for gourmet coffee and you don’t feel an urge to Instagram the crystal wall any more, just around the corner sits a humble art gallery that is sure to enchant you.

Fann-A-Porter is an artistic space that features an eclectic collection of profound paintings and seductive sculptures by artists from around the world.

This isn’t the first arty brainchild of founder Ghada Kunash. Its sibling gallery, Vindemia at JBR, specialises in vintage items, which range from Hollywood memorabilia to antique gramophones and jukeboxes.

Fann-A-Porter, on the other hand, features works by international artists, and also serves as a platform for local talent.

Kunash explains her thinking behind the concept: “Fann is the Arabic word for art, and together it says ‘art to go’, which reflects the whole idea. I wanted a place that is easy and inviting to the public, particularly young collectors and those who have never thought of investing in art. It is a fun and accessible place that showcases good artwork from promising young artists.

“It’s a place that is less formal, where art can be seen by people who are just walking by.”

Fann-A-Porter’s collections range from contemporary paintings and sculptures to beautifully printed stationery. In collaboration with other artists, Kunash has designed fashionable leather handbags and culinary items that are guaranteed to bring artistic flair to both wardrobe and kitchen.

The gallery regularly hosts exhibitions of regional and international artworks. It recently displayed the cultural canvases of Emirati painter Fatma Lootah. Titled Women Scented in Oud, the collection was a combination of abstract portraits and paintings that guided its audience on a journey through the desert. Each piece resonated with undertones of local heritage and tradition.

Fann-A-Porter’s winter exhibition features works by Lebanese artist George Bassil and runs until January 4.

Hazem Zubi from Jordan, and Abdul Rahim Salim from the UAE and Mohamed Mazrouei from Egypt have also exhibited their works in the gallery. International exhibiting artists include Soile Yly Mayry of Finland and Gerdine Duijsens of Denmark.

Kunash says the busy Kempinski brings a generous amount of traffic to the gallery. There is a busy year-round art calendar and work from an eclectic range of talented young artists in the pipeline.

In addition to the exhibitions, Fann-A-Porter always houses a selection of art from emerging Emirati artists as a tribute to the UAE.
