One of the capital’s islands, Sir Bani Yas Island, has the distinction of being named one of The Guardian’s Top 40 must-see tourist destinations this year. And then there’s Ferrari World on Yas Island and the annual grand prix event that takes place on the same island.
But Abu Dhabi is not only a tourist haven, it also sets a pretty high standard for residents. Last year’s survey among Abu Dhabi residents conducted by an online research firm ranked the top seven areas for residents in the city. The factors that residents considered included value for money, schools, healthcare, recreation, leisure, shopping and malls, safety and security, peace and quiet, community feel, accessibility, scenery and landscaping, among others. The verdict?
The number one ranked residential space by residents was Abu Dhabi island’s western area, which includes the popular Al Khalidiya, Al Bateen and Ras Al Akhdar. The district came first in all factors except value for money, accessibility, peace and quiet and accessibility to schools.
On the number two spot was central Abu Dhabi, which was ranked highly in terms of accessibility. This includes areas like Al Mushrif, Al Nahyan Camp and Al Karama.
The third most sought-after residential destination in the capital was a tie between Abu Dhabi Gate City and Madinat Khalifa, which received top marks from respondents of the survey for value for money and peacefulness.
Next was Abu Dhabi island’s eastern area, including Salam Street and Eastern Mangroves, which came second in terms of accessibility. This was followed by Tourist Club Area (TCA), Corniche and Al Markaziya. TCA was ranked number one for ‘going out’, yet received the worst ranking for value for money. Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Musaffah, suburbs of the capital, were at the tail end of the ratings. These places, however, ranked first in terms of school availability.
Given that the only constant in this rapidly expanding city is change, the scales have the potential of tipping in favor of the suburbs or new developments like Reem Island because of the rapid developments taking place there.
• Al Mushrif, Al Nahyan Camp and Al Karama provide the best accessibility
• Al Khalidiya and Al Bateen top the rankings in safety and security, recreation
• The Abu Dhabi Gate City and Madinat Khalifa areas top in value for money
