The area of Al Wasl in Dubai used to be quiet, with a sense of peace hanging in the air that seemingly never wanted to leave. Villas, residential or otherwise, dotted its whole stretch. There was nary a single mixed-use development in sight, and its prominent landmarks that stood proud for years, apparently oblivious to the daily rush-hour traffic, were the Emirates Post office, Safa Park and the Iranian Hospital.
Suddenly, some commercial and residential villas became eerily vacant and were eventually demolished. Construction cranes soon took over. But the landmarks still stand today (the hospital even underwent a facelift), along with some of the old medical and dental clinics, pharmacies, banks, and beauty salons and spas that line both sides of the road. Even hole-in-the-wall restaurants, the likes of Smiling BKK, have stood the test of time.
However, Al Wasl now carries a different beat – buzzing and lively – palpable even from a distance. Lifestyle destinations have begun springing up in the area, drawing residents and visitors in droves to its midst.
At the edge of Safa Park is wasl square, the first mixed-use project to be constructed in the locality. It is composed of a slew of restaurants and cafes, pharmacies and retail shops that complement the apartments and townhouses.
Citywalk is another must-check spot for shoppers and food lovers alike, with its wide range of shopping and dining options. Tree-lined walkways were integrated into its design to give it a European vibe on top of a piazza where family and friends can hang out, and The Lake that is complete with water features and a children’s play area.
Expected to open very soon in the area is the hip and trendy place Boxpark. What makes it stand out from the rest of the new destinations in Al Wasl is its use of industrial containers, which will be home to many food and beverage outlets, and boutiques.
Al Wasl’s sense of peace has left, replaced with a vibrant pulse that will certainly put it in the list of must-visit destinations in Dubai.
• The used-to-be-quiet Al Wasl area now carries a vibrant vibe
• Existing dining/shopping destinations are Citywalk, wasl square
• The latest must-visit spot Boxpark is expected to open very soon
