In the western end of Abu Dhabi, right beside the beach, lies the quaint little locality of Al Bateen. Luxurious villas are the main feature here. Though the population is predominantly Arab, it is a favourite spot for expatriates who want access to the beach with a bit of privacy.

The area is lined with small gardens and ample parking space. Since it is adjacent to the palace area of Manaseer, the roads and amenities here are maintained spanking clean.

The region's only airport for private jets and business aviation, the Al Bateen Executive Airport, is located in this neighbourhood. Accorded the Second Best Executive Airport in the World award in 2013, it can accommodate up to 90 private jets. DhabiJet, its fixed base operations (FBO) provider, offers clients concierge, ground handling, aircraft cleaning, fuelling and catering services, among others.

Al Bateen is frequented by art aficionados as the Etihad Modern Art Gallery and the Etihad Antiques Gallery are situated here. The antiques gallery is resplendent with prayer beads, Holy Quran, prayer books and other artefacts reflecting the Islamic era. The modern art gallery, as its name suggests, features a collection of modern artwork. The adjacent Art House Café offers budding artists a chance to express their creativity over a cup of coffee.

Opposite the art galleries is the Al Bateen Mall which carries basic home supplies, electronic goods and clothes. The Al Bateen Marina caters to beach lovers with its Marina Sports Club. In the Bateen Dhow Yard, traditional boats (dhows) are still being constructed up to this day.

Medical facilities around the area are the Bateen Primary Health Care Centre, Al Noor Hospital Family Care Clinic and Swedish Medical Centre. Al Bateen also has a handful of schools, while the InterContinental Abu Dhabi is a prominent hotel in the area.

Although it exudes an exclusive air, Al Bateen is just a few minutes away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

Handy Hints:

• Al Bateen Executive Airport was world's second best in 2013

• The area's dhow yard still builds traditional boats up to this day

• Its beach is frequented by expats; two art galleries by art lovers
