We live in a two bedroom apartment in a modern building in Tecom, says Kelly Marque. We've been here five years now and we chose it primarily because we felt it represented value for money, and when we moved in that was our priority. We're currently renting because although we've bought in Dubai in the past, we felt buying wasn't the right option for us at the moment.
A personal touch
Although we're only renting, we've done our best to personalise the apartment by painting walls and using decor to make it our own. We love using photographs to make a house a home, and collecting soft furnishings and quirky bits from our travels to remind us of where we've been. The apartment is well-laid-out and practical and we've found it more than adequate for our needs.
We love the location of the apartment. It's easily accessible from Shaikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, and now as all the new connecting roads are open we can easily get to most areas in Dubai in only a short time. Our son is at a nursery in Umm Suqeim and we work in Media City and Al Quoz, and the journeys for all three are only a matter of 10-20 minutes or so.
Another huge plus for us is the prompt, reliable maintenance staff who are available to help with minor DIY projects and attend to anything that needs fixing. There's 24-hour security too, which makes us feel safe.
In the immediate Tecom area we have plenty of amenities, including supermarkets, pharmacies, salons, dry cleaners and food outlets, and — depending on traffic and construction — we can walk to most of them. If we can't get something locally, we have the shops in The Greens and Emirates Hills close by. We also have plenty of leisure and entertainment options right on our doorstep; there are several hotels in the Tecom area that we can walk to, and we can be over in Media City, the Marina or JBR in ten minutes. We're also very close to Mall of the Emirates, and can get to Dubai Mall and Downtown Dubai in no time. We're also within walking distance of Emirates Hills.
We have a lovely pool here and a gym as well; having facilities on-site was another big draw for us when we were looking for somewhere to live.
As our area isn't part of a master-planned development, some areas in between buildings are a little untidy and can be hazardous when we're walking with the stroller, especially in parts that are under construction. It would be nice if the area could be a little greener.
Need for space
Although we've really enjoyed living in Tecom and we've had great value for money over the past few years, we'll be moving on soon. Our family has just expanded with the arrival of our daughter so we've outgrown the apartment and need more space. We'll be sad to leave.

Tecom is a residential and commercial area consisting mainly of high-rise towers, located between The Greens and Al Barsha. Apartments similar to the Marques' typically command an annual rent of Dh85,000-Dh110,000, according to the Rera rental index
