In the heart of The Beach at Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR), just by a water feature, is a quaint-looking brasserie called Big Chefs. While many would not consider it a venue off the beaten path, a visit might just change their minds.
The Dubai outpost is the Turkish brand's international debut. The first Big Chefs was opened in Ankara by entrepreneur Gamze Cizreli in 2007 at a time of great personal crisis, entirely with the help of bank loans. In that sense, the success and growth of Big Chefs is a story of triumph of the spirit. Within a couple of years, an outlet opened in Istanbul, and since then, there has been no looking back. A second Dubai branch is set to be launched in September at Boxpark.
Informal and warm, with cosy wooden interiors and soft lights provided by chandeliers of various designs and sizes, Big Chefs Dubai offers an extensive menu of Turkish grills and dishes, as well as Italian, Mexican and American cuisine — nearly 150 different items. There's a plate for every palate, and while it's always near full, it's not chaotic.
The furniture stands out because no two tables are alike. Some have a retro finish with white classic wooden chairs that have a worn out look, while others have wrought-iron garden chairs in red. Spread across 400 sq m with space for 150 guests, the restaurant has a lively open kitchen, with the walls lined with shelves full of Big Chefs' signature Turkish olive oils. There are big, cushy sofas in one corner with a floor-to-ceiling dark wood bookcase rising behind. People tend to focus on the food though, so for now the books are just an aesthetic touch.
While a variety of pizzas, steaks, seafood, burgers, pastas, salads, desserts and iced teas and fresh juices — rose hip or rooibos brews for instance served in massive glass jars—are available, Big Chefs is known for its generous breakfast offering, Morning Delight. It includes three different types of cheeses, curd with jam, veggies such as olives, tomatoes and peppers, bagels, Nutella, juice and tea or coffee. Other popular items include crispy manti or yoghurt with herbs, spinach and ricotta pizza, kunafa with blueberries and mozzarella, the roasted leg of lamb and the banana split. The New York steak stands out too.
A family-friendly restaurant with a chilled-out vibe, all of Big Chefs' products are made in-house with fresh, quality ingredients. Everyone is welcome; it's like a home away from home with great food wand the promise of an evening well spent.
