The popular design-centric avenue in Abu Dhabi, Corniche, has a magnificent blend of greenery, spectacular beach and rows of business centres, adding a vibrant character to the city.
A picture-perfect setting of sand and sea against imposing skyscrapers, the eight-kilometre stretch is a renowned attraction worth a visit any time of the year. Once the best place for pearling and fishing, time has turned it into a buzzing and happening place dotted with high-rise office towers, plush residences, waterfront hotels and plenty of urban spaces. It’s got everything people need – petrol stations, banks, shops, restaurants, cafés, mosques and medical centres.
The remarkable structures in Corniche include the swanky Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, Emirates Palace, Nation Towers, Baynunah Hilton, The Landmark and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority Tower.
The recreational area hosts free concerts, marine and water sports competitions, and triathlon events. The beach has separate sections for families and singles. It has scores of lifeguards securing the safety of swimmers. Restaurants and cafes line the beachfront.
There is plenty to do in Corniche the whole day. There are cycling lanes, pathways for rollerblade enthusiasts and a skateboarding park. The easiest way of getting around is by pedal power. Kids and adults can hire a bike to see the sights at a leisurely pace. There are even specially designed bikes for women wearing abayas.
With over 1,000 parking spaces, Corniche frequently gets swarmed by beach and park-goers. Its open areas, including the many parks (Lake, Urban, Family, Formal, Heritage) lining it, are a haven for active outdoor activities like football, cricket and badminton.
With the weather improving, don’t make the mistake of not stopping by. This place is a favourite hangout for decluttering the mind, or taking some respite or lazy walks especially in the cooler months.
