With the unquestionable economic growth being experienced in the UAE, a lot of industries continue to be established here, and more projects are being introduced while others are on their way to completion.
Foremost among the various business sectors thriving in the UAE is the media, and continuing growth in this sector can be felt in the presence of three primary media hubs, all under TECOM Investments; that is, Dubai Media City (DMC), the International Media Production Zone (IMPZ) and Dubai Studio City (DSC). Most of us here know about DMC and IMPZ – both free zones that cater to specific media segments and requirements. Whereas DMC serves more as the ultimate business hub for media companies, IMPZ has focused its attention on the provision of infrastructure addressing the needs of ''graphic art, printing, publishing, packaging, and media production companies.''
Part of Dubai Media City, DSC was established in 2005 to address the growing requirements for media production facilities in the emirate. With a few war bunker-like buildings currently set against the seemingly desolate desert landscape, DSC actually houses one of the largest sound stages in the world.
The people behind DSC intend to make the free zone a major go-to place in the region and worldwide when it comes to film production, providing ''pre-built studios, sound stages, workshops, backlots and stage areas, a broadcast centre housing offices and post-production studios, and a business centre for freelancers.'' Apart from film production facilities, there are plans to establish film and TV academies, entertainment and retail units, hotels, residential amenities and other related infrastructure.
With ambitious plans of becoming the ultimate venue for film and TV production in the Middle East and for nearby areas, DSC targeting Hollywood makes sense… but that's just part of the plan as the establishment ultimately hopes to benefit the local breed of filmmakers and the UAE economy as a whole.
