Airport Road or 2nd Street is the common or old name for Shaikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street, one that is still used despite the name change last year. One of the oldest streets in the capital, it was named so because it used to be the only road leading to the only airport in Abu Dhabi, now called the Al Bateen Executive Airport.
Airport Road starts at the Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque and ends at the Corniche. Almost every other main street in the capital branches off from this road. Not surprisingly then, it is one of the busiest streets in Abu Dhabi. It is constantly abuzz with activity, from cars and pedestrians alike, at all hours.
Home to Carrefour, Al Wahda Mall, HSBC, Daman, Al Noor Hospital, car showrooms like those of Al Futtaim Motors and Mercedes-Benz, banks, food outlets, hotels and many furniture shops, this street is swamped with commercial activity year round. Widely regarded as one of the best streets to set up shop for both seasoned businessmen and newbies alike, rental rates in this area are, for a city like Abu Dhabi, reasonable.
Both fully furnished and unfurnished office space is available along the stretch, with starting prices of Dh2,500 per month. Furnished and serviced offices are more popular, albeit more expensive, with facilities such as fully stocked kitchenettes, fast-speed Internet with round-the-clock support, meeting rooms and reception areas with contemporary fittings, and the mandatory security in place. Unfurnished retail shops in the area are also plentiful, with rental rates at around Dh120,000 per annum for a little over 500 square feet of shop space.
What draws big names in commerce to Airport Road is not limited to its central location or ease of access. It is also home to a large population of residents, who, within a short walk of their homes, become potential customers to the restaurants and retailers they share the road with.
