A few years ago, the retail scene in the capital Abu Dhabi did not have enough to offer in terms of malls. Residents had the option of either getting their retail therapy fix in Abu Dhabi Mall, Marina Mall or any of the smaller establishments in the city, or Dubai where bigger and better shopping complexes were available.
Today, however, it can be said that the capital is indeed catching up with Dubai, slowly filling its corners – on island or off island – with numerous retail choices and giving its residents a reason not to travel far for their shopping needs. This development has also obviously helped boost the emirate’s economy.
Among the highly anticipated retail offerings in Abu Dhabi is the upcoming Yas Mall on Yas Island scheduled to open its doors in November. Enjoying a superb location in what is considered the region’s ultimate leisure destination, it is said to feature hundreds of shops, a massive department store and a “gathering space” dubbed the Town Centre. In the pipeline are super regional malls Saadiyat Mall/The District, Reem Mall and Sowwah Central. Marina Mall is also planning to increase its retail space to accommodate more tenants and meet the residents’ growing retail requirements.
Just recently, Nation Towers in Corniche opened its shopping complex featuring food and beverage outlets, and retail shops. Al Marasy in Bateen also delivered its retail component that encompasses restaurants, cafes and shops located right at the Al Bateen waterfront.
Aside from the frequently visited and popular malls located all over the city, residents may also hie off to The Galleria on Al Maryah Island and Boutik Mall on Reem Island, or head for off-island venues Deerfields Townsquare in Shahama, Al Raha Mall in Khalifa City, Bawabat Al Sharq Mall in Baniyas, Dalma Mall in Mussafah and Mazyad Mall in Mohammed Bin Zayed City.
